Confused by Queensland's coronavirus border rules with New South Wales? Here's what you need to know
21/12/20
Queensland's rush to stop coronavirus spreading from New South Wales has created a whole new set of rules for locals and visitors to get their heads around.
There are different rules for residents and non-residents, and they depend on where you've come from and when you were in a designated NSW hotspot.
Here's what you need to know.
Where are the NSW hotspots?
It's a long list. Queensland has designated 35 local government areas (LGAs) in NSW as coronavirus hotspots and you need to know if you've been in one.
Check the list here. It covers everything from Greater Sydney to the Blue Mountains in the west, south to Wollongong and to the Central Coast in the north.
Anyone who attempts to travel to Queensland must apply for a Queensland border declaration pass. You can apply for one here.
Should I be in quarantine?
It all depends on where you have been and when you have crossed the Queensland border — or when you plan to cross it.
If you're travelling to Queensland after 1:00am on Tuesday, prepare to spend Christmas and New Year's Eve — 14 days, in fact — in hotel quarantine at your own expense.
That will cost travellers $2,800 or $3,700 for two adults sharing. The cost rises to $4,620 for a family of four.
For those who crossed the border before the deadline, the rules are different.
I visited the northern beaches … now what?
If you arrived in Queensland after 1:00am on Saturday, you should already be in hotel quarantine.
Before the Saturday deadline, new arrivals only needed to get a test and quarantine at home for 14 days from the day they left the Northern Beaches.
For people who have visited Greater Sydney, the rules are different.
Anyone who arrived in Queensland from Greater Sydney before 1:00am on Monday should have already been tested.
Remember that once you get a test you need to stay at home, or in some accommodation, until you receive a negative result.
As of 1:00am on Monday, the rules changed again.
Non-Queensland residents who visited hotspots were being sent to hotel quarantine for 14 days at their own expense.
Queenslanders returning home are OK to quarantine at home, or in other accommodation, for 14 days since they last left a hotspot.
For example, if you were at Sydney's Narrabeen Beach on December 13, you'd need to self-isolate at home until December 27 — two weeks after you visited the hotspot.
But those rules only apply if you arrive back before 1:00am on Tuesday.
What happens from 1:00am on Tuesday?
The borders are shutting to anyone from a hotspot in New South Wales.
From 1:00am, the state will close to any visitor who has been in a COVID-19 hotspot in NSW in the past 14 days or "since the hotspot was declared … whichever is shorter".
The barricades are going up on major roads at the Queensland-New South Wales border crossing.
On Monday, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said too many people were breaking the rules.
"Unfortunately people are doing the wrong thing and we can't risk it," she said.
"People will start to see barricades going up again this afternoon, and by 6:00am tomorrow it'll be back to the strong border measures that we have seen in Queensland that have kept Queenslanders safe."
At the crossing, police will be checking border passes and giving quarantine orders, or turning people around.
Authorities have warned motorists to have their declaration passes ready and expect delays.
What about travellers from other parts of NSW?
Visitors from the rest of NSW, outside the 35 LGAs which have been designated as hotspots, can still enter Queensland.
However, they must apply for a Queensland Border Declaration Pass before attempting the journey.
How about travellers from other states?
For now, Queensland's borders to other states remain fully open ahead of the busy festive season.
Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said while there were no plans to impose restrictions, state authorities were closely monitoring developments.
"There are no local transmitted cases in any other jurisdiction in Australia," Ms D'Ath said.
"So Queensland is open to every other state and territory and is, in fact, open and good to go for everyone outside Greater Sydney and the northern beaches."
Interstate travellers whose journeys to Queensland see them transit through Sydney Airport should check with their travel providers about any possible restrictions.
When could things change again?
Ms D'Ath said New South Wales would need to record 28 days of no unlinked transmission before travellers would be welcomed back into Queensland.
"We will not be reopening back to the northern beaches or Greater Sydney before January 8," Ms D'Ath said.
"For the tourist operators and those who are relying on people coming from those areas, we do want to give you some certainty in saying, 'Do not expect any change before January 8.'"
"We will re-evaluate at that time based on what is happening in New South Wales."
The Queensland Government said it was constantly reviewing its coronavirus strategy, including border restrictions, with the crisis now at a "critical" stage, according to Ms Palaszczuk.
She said no decisions were being made lightly, given their impact on family reunions over the festive period as well as struggling Queensland businesses.
The lack of Sydney visitors will hit tourism operators hard, especially on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Far North Queensland.
"Hopefully, in the months to come, we'll be able to welcome [Sydney residents] back to our wonderful Sunshine State, but now is not the time," Ms Palaszczuk said.

ESSENTIAL TRAVEL VS NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL
24/03/20
Following the recent government COVID-19 updates and in particular the advice surrounding non-essential travel, we wanted to make our customers aware of our current understanding regarding this.
Most caravan parks remain open to provide "essential" travel to those in need and provide a safe space for those who need access to holiday parks. To remain in these parks, your van needs to be fully self-contained with bathroom and cooking facilities as all communal park facilities have been closed.
So what is "essential" travel?
For all travellers who are needing to stay at a caravan park over the coming weeks and months, social-distancing and hygiene measures are mandated to ensure the safety of you and others.
If you have any further queries, please feel free to contact us or alternatively please contact your caravan park.
